Terms of Service

Last updated: July 2026

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of the DocButterfly platform and API ("Service"). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not accept the beta and no-warranty terms below, do not use the Service.

1. The Service

DocButterfly provides a REST API and web portal for document automation, including PDF conversion, merging, watermarking, redaction, data extraction, and related operations. Features are subject to change as the platform evolves.

2. Accounts

You must provide a valid email address to register. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your API key and account credentials. Notify us immediately at support@docbutterfly.com if you suspect unauthorised access.

One person or legal entity may not maintain more than one free account.

3. Tokens and Billing

The Service uses a prepaid token system. Tokens are consumed per API operation at the rates published on our Pricing page. Tokens are non-refundable except at our discretion in cases of Service error.

Free and trial token allowances (including any free beta or evaluation allowance) are provided at our sole discretion and may be changed, reduced, or revoked at any time without notice. Paid token balances are not affected by changes to free allowances.

The Service is currently in pre-launch beta and we do not process payments or collect payment card details. When paid plans launch we will identify our payment processor and its terms here before any payment is taken.

4. Acceptable Use

You agree not to use the Service to:

  • Process documents containing illegal content or that infringe third-party intellectual property rights
  • Attempt to reverse-engineer, decompile, or extract source code from the Service
  • Perform automated abuse, denial-of-service attacks, or credential stuffing against the Service or its infrastructure
  • Resell or sublicense access to the API without our prior written consent
  • Violate any applicable law or regulation

We reserve the right to suspend or terminate accounts that violate these terms without prior notice.

5. Data and Privacy

Documents submitted for processing are processed in memory and are not retained after the response is returned, except where you explicitly save a document as a template sample or a training sample, and except for a per-account cache of operation outputs used to avoid double-billing identical requests. API usage metadata (endpoint, token cost, timestamp, IP address, client user-agent, and a SHA-256 hash of the submitted document) is retained for billing and support purposes. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

You retain ownership of all documents and data you submit. By using the Service you grant us a limited license to process that data solely to deliver the requested operation. Where you explicitly mark a document as a consented or synthetic training sample, you additionally grant us a license to retain and process that document to build and improve extraction models scoped to your own account. You may revoke this license by deleting the sample.

6. Intellectual Property

The DocButterfly platform, API, website, and documentation are owned by us and protected by copyright and other laws. Nothing in these Terms transfers any intellectual property rights to you.

Output documents generated by the Service from your content are owned by you.

7. Beta Status

The Service is currently offered as a beta (early access) release. This means features may be incomplete, may change or be removed without notice, and may behave unexpectedly. Data, templates, and configurations created during beta may be reset, migrated, or lost. Free and trial token allowances are part of the beta program and may be changed or withdrawn at any time.

We may end the beta period, change pricing, or discontinue the Service at any time. Your continued use of the Service constitutes acceptance of its beta nature and the disclaimers in sections 9 and 10.

8. Uptime and Support

We aim for high availability but do not provide any uptime guarantee or formal Service Level Agreement (SLA), particularly during beta. The Service may be unavailable, interrupted, or degraded at any time. We will communicate planned maintenance in advance where possible.

Support is provided via email at support@docbutterfly.com on a best-effort basis.

9. Accuracy and Verification of Output

The Service performs automated and AI-assisted document operations — including conversion, extraction, redaction, and generation. These operations can and may produce errors, omissions, or incorrect output, just as any automated or AI tool can be wrong.

You are solely responsible for reviewing and verifying all output before relying on it. In particular:

  • Redaction is not guaranteed. Automated PII detection and redaction may miss sensitive data or redact incorrectly. You must verify that every document is fully redacted before sharing or publishing it. Do not rely on the Service alone to remove confidential information.
  • Extracted and generated data may be inaccurate. Verify extracted values, generated documents, and converted files against the source before use.
  • You must not use the Service's output as the sole basis for any decision with legal, financial, medical, regulatory, safety, or other significant consequences without independent human review.

You assume all risk arising from reliance on the Service's output.

10. Disclaimer of Warranties

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE LAW, THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE", WITH ALL FAULTS AND WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS, IMPLIED, OR STATUTORY. We expressly disclaim all warranties, including but not limited to warranties of accuracy, reliability, completeness, availability, security, fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, secure, or that any output will be correct or suitable for your purposes. No advice or information, whether oral or written, obtained from us or through the Service creates any warranty not expressly stated in these Terms.

11. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, DocButterfly and its operators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data, goodwill, or business opportunities, arising from or related to your use of (or inability to use) the Service or any reliance on its output — even if we have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, our total aggregate liability for any and all claims arising from these Terms or your use of the Service shall not exceed the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in the 30 days preceding the event giving rise to the claim, or (b) USD $50.

Some jurisdictions do not allow the exclusion of certain warranties or the limitation of certain liabilities; in those jurisdictions our liability is limited to the smallest extent permitted by law.

12. Termination

You may close your account at any time by contacting us. Unused tokens are non-refundable unless we terminate your account without cause, in which case we will refund the pro-rata value of unused tokens at our standard rate.

We may suspend or terminate accounts for violations of these Terms, non-payment, or prolonged inactivity (12+ months).

13. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms. We will notify you by email at least 14 days before material changes take effect. Continued use of the Service after that date constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

14. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which DocButterfly is registered. Any disputes shall be resolved in the courts of that jurisdiction unless otherwise required by applicable consumer protection law.
